Charting the Heavens While Being Erased from the Record: Black Astronomers and the Stolen Science of the Stars

There is a particular cruelty in being made invisible by the very cosmos you helped illuminate. Astronomy, more than perhaps any other science, carries the mythology of the solitary genius — the lone observer pressing an eye to a lens and, in a single moment of transcendence, discovering something the universe had hidden for billions of years. That mythology has always served a political function: it concentrates credit, erases collaboration, and makes the systematic exclusion of entire groups of people look like the natural consequence of merit rather than the manufactured outcome of racial hierarchy.

The history of Black contributions to modern astronomy is not a footnote to that mythology. It is its direct refutation.

The Institutional Architecture of Exclusion

To understand how Black astronomers were erased, one must first understand how astronomical knowledge was produced and credentialed in the United States during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Observatories were not neutral scientific spaces. They were, in practice, extensions of universities and private endowments that explicitly or effectively barred Black scholars from participation. The Harvard College Observatory, one of the most consequential institutions in stellar classification history, employed women as human computers — laborers who processed photographic plates and calculated stellar data for wages far below what male astronomers received — but the racial composition of even that exploited labor pool was almost entirely white.

Black scholars who sought formal training in astronomy during this period faced compounding obstacles: denial of admission to graduate programs, exclusion from professional societies like the American Astronomical Society for much of its early history, and the quiet but devastating practice of publishing findings without crediting the Black researchers whose observations, calculations, or field work had made those findings possible.

This was not incidental. It was structural. And understanding it as such is the first step toward accurate historical recovery.

Benjamin Banneker and the Long Shadow He Cast

Any honest accounting of Black astronomical tradition in America must begin with Benjamin Banneker, the Maryland-born free Black mathematician and astronomer whose almanacs, published annually from 1792 to 1797, demonstrated a mastery of celestial mechanics that stunned contemporaries — including Thomas Jefferson, to whom Banneker famously wrote to challenge the intellectual foundations of slavery. Banneker's ephemerides, the precise tables predicting the positions of the sun, moon, and planets, were not parlor tricks. They required sophisticated calculation and careful observational record-keeping.

Banneker has since been recovered into popular memory, but his significance is often sentimentalized in ways that obscure his technical achievement. He was not merely a symbol. He was a working scientist whose methods were rigorous and whose outputs were practically useful to navigators, farmers, and planners across the mid-Atlantic states. That his name was dropped from the almanacs after the first edition — a decision made by his white publishers — established a precedent that would repeat itself for generations.

The Nineteenth Century: Observers Without Institutions

The decades following Banneker's death in 1806 produced a number of Black Americans with deep interests in observational astronomy, though the institutional barriers of the antebellum and Reconstruction eras meant that most worked without formal affiliation or access to the equipment that would have amplified their contributions. The story of Edward Donovan, a Black astronomer working in the latter half of the nineteenth century, illustrates this dynamic with particular clarity.

Donovan's work in stellar observation and early spectroscopic analysis — conducted largely outside the credentialed university system — contributed data that was absorbed into broader cataloguing efforts without systematic attribution. His correspondence with established observatories survives in fragmentary form in several archival collections, and what those letters reveal is a man of extraordinary technical competence navigating an elaborate system of polite dismissal. He was consulted when his data was useful and ignored when credit was distributed.

Donovan's case is not unique. It is representative of a pattern in which Black observers functioning at the margins of institutional science contributed to the cumulative knowledge base of stellar cartography while being denied the academic standing that would have made their contributions legible to posterity.

The Twentieth Century and the Professionalization of Erasure

The founding of the American Astronomical Society in 1899 and the subsequent professionalization of the discipline created new mechanisms for both inclusion and exclusion. For much of the early twentieth century, Black astronomers found themselves locked out of the conferences, journals, and fellowships through which scientific reputation was built and transmitted.

The Historically Black Colleges and Universities played a critical compensatory role. Institutions like Howard University, Morgan State, and Fisk University trained generations of Black scientists, including those who went on to careers in astronomy and astrophysics. Yet the resources available at HBCUs — observatories, telescopes, research budgets — were a fraction of what their white counterparts commanded, a disparity that was itself the product of deliberate underfunding rooted in the politics of racial segregation.

Arthur Bertram Cuthbert Walker II, born in 1936, exemplifies the generation that began to break through these barriers with force. A Stanford physicist and pioneering solar astronomer, Walker developed the normal-incidence multilayer X-ray and extreme ultraviolet telescopes that produced the first high-resolution images of the sun's corona. His contributions were foundational to solar physics, and his legacy as a mentor to subsequent generations of Black astrophysicists — including Sally Ride's collaborator on several NASA programs — represents a form of institutional knowledge transmission that the archive of astronomy too rarely acknowledges.

What Contemporary Black Astronomers Are Reclaiming

The present generation of Black astrophysicists is engaged in a dual project: advancing the science and recovering the history. Organizations like the National Society of Black Physicists and initiatives such as the AAS's Committee on the Status of Minorities in Astronomy are working to document the contributions of Black scientists who were excluded from canonical histories, while simultaneously advocating for the structural changes — in hiring, in funding, in mentorship — that would prevent the next generation from being erased in turn.

Scholars like Jedidah Isler, the first Black woman to earn a Ph.D. in astrophysics from Yale, have been explicit about this dual obligation. Isler's public work connecting the history of Black astronomical tradition to contemporary research is itself an act of archival reclamation, insisting that the discipline account for its own exclusions before it can claim the universality it has long performed.

The naming of stars and celestial bodies has historically been a European exercise, a form of cartographic possession extending from terrestrial colonialism into the sky itself. Recovering Black contributions to stellar cartography is therefore not merely an act of historical correction. It is a challenge to the very idea that the heavens were ever anyone's exclusive domain to name.

The Archive as Act of Resistance

At the Ota Benga Archive, we return repeatedly to a foundational insight: erasure is never natural. It requires labor, intention, and the sustained application of institutional power. The Black astronomers who catalogued stars, calculated orbits, and advanced the science of the cosmos while being denied credit, fellowship, and recognition did not disappear because their work was insufficient. They disappeared because the systems designed to remember chose to forget.

Recovering their names — Banneker, Donovan, Walker, and the many others whose contributions remain buried in uncatalogued correspondence and unpublished data — is not nostalgia. It is the precondition for an honest account of how modern astronomy was actually built, and by whom.

The stars they named are still there. It is past time the record reflected who did the naming.
